Hooper Strikes Late In Beat Victory
Aug. 6, 2001
Former NCSU soccer star Charmaine Hooper scored two goals in a four-minute span to lift the WUSA's Atlanta Beat (9-4-7) over the Washington Freedom (6-11-3) 2-1 Saturday in the nation's capital.
Hooper's first goal came in the 81st minute when she headed a crossing pass that rebounded off the crossbar and tumbled into the goal off the back of Freedom keeper Erin Fahey.
Her second tally of the match came in the 85th minute when she tapped a beautiful feed from teammate Sun Wen past Fahey for the go-ahead goal.
The goals were Hooper's eighth and ninth of the season, which currently ties her for fourth in the WUSA for goals scored with Carolina's Danielle Fotopoulos.
The win clinched a playoff spot for the Beat and gave them 34 points for the season, good enough for second place behind the Bay Area CyberRays. Atlanta will face Bay Area on Thursday in Atlanta at 7:00 p.m.
