Sunday marks the home opener for the NC State women's soccer team against Cincinnati at Dail Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
Both clubs made their season debuts on the road Friday night. The Wolfpack came up on the short end of a 2-0 loss to Old Dominion, while the Bearcats played to a 1-1 draw at Elon.
NC State is now 2-2 in its season-opening matches under head coach Steve Springthorpe.
In Friday night’s game at ODU, State compiled plenty of scoring chances, including 26 shots, but could not get one in the net as the Monarchs keeper made five saves.
Five players made their first career start for the Wolfpack, including red-shirt sophomore goalie Victoria Hopkins and sophomore Kasey Koballa. The other three included freshmen Caroline Gentry, Brittany Stanko and Sharon Wojcik. Red-shirt sophomore Jennie Krauser also started for the first time since 2010 after missing all of last season due to injury.
The Bearcats got a tally in the 12th minute from freshman Laura Rose to gain an early lead, but Elon scored the equalizer just three minutes after halftime. UC keeper Kristina Utley recorded three saves in the draw.
NC State owns a 3-2-1 all-time record over the Bearcats, but this is the first meeting since 1999.
NC State hits the road for two games next weekend. The Pack will play at Texas on Friday, Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. ET in Austin. The game will be shown on the Longhorn Network. The club will then play at LSU on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., at 2 p.m. ET.
