Women's Soccer Blanks Maryland in 2nd Straight ACC Win
Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Meredith Parrilla posted her first goal of the season to give the NC State women’s soccer team (8-4-2, 3-3 ACC) the win over Maryland (4-8-2, 0-5-1 ACC). Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors netted one save en route to her seventh shutout this season. Senior Carol Tognetti also posted a team save in the red and white’s second straight ACC win.
“I’m happy with our possession throughout the game,” said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. “Maryland’s goalie made some good saves. We told our team at the half to keep creating opportunities, and they did; it was a good time for Meredith to get her first goal.”
NC State controlled the first half, out shooting the Terrapins 12-5. About 20 minutes into the half, sophomore Lindsay Vera passed the ball to Tognetti, who booted the ball from ten yards out. Maryland goalie, Nikki Resnick was there for the save. A few minutes later, Kaila Sciascia took a corner kick for Maryland, and after Connors pushed the ball out from the net, players scrambled in the box. Lauren Gamble attempted a shot, but Tognetti saved the ball from going in. The Pack had another opportunity to score with about 18 minutes left to go when Vera took a left footed shot from the right side of the net. Resnick moved to the side of the net fast and made the save. The half ended scoreless.
In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth. With seventeen minutes left, the Pack had a good scoring opportunity when freshman Katie Ruiz crossed the ball from the left. Junior Jessica O'Rourke just barely missed the ball. At the 78:47 mark, Ruiz took a corner kick for the Wolfpack. Parrilla headed the ball into the net for the game-winning goal. The red and white won the match, 1-0.
NC State travels to Chestnut Hill, MA on Sunday, Oct. 15 to take on No. 19 Boston College at 1 p.m.
