Pack Goes Scoreless in 1-0 Loss to Miami
RALEIGH, N.C. Miami’s Vikki Alonzo made three saves for her ACC-leading 11th shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over NC State in women’s soccer action Thursday night from NC State Soccer Stadium.
Miami (10-6-3, 3-4-2 ACC) scored the matches only goal in the 65th minute when Jessica Wyble’s pass found the feet of Julianne Rickers and she raced past the defense and found the back of the net from 20 yards out.
NC State (8-11, 0-9 ACC) had a couple of great scoring chances in the early portion of the first half. The Wolfpack’s leading-scorer, Lindsay Vera, caromed a shot off the cross bar at 11:20. That shot followed up another chance by the Houston, Texas, native that Alonzo had to haul in just 25 seconds earlier.
Rickers answered for the Hurricanes when she banged one of the post at 13:54, but the score remained scoreless going to halftime.
Kim Kern entered in goal for the Pack in the second half and Ashlee Burt tested her minutes later, but the freshman keeper was up to the task for her only save of the evening.
NC State freshman Tayna Cain had a nice look on goal, but Alonzo made the save in the 64th minute. That led to the Canes goal a few moments later.
The Wolfpack maintained its effort and Briana Cunningham had two chances in the late stages of the second stanza, but was unable to connect.
Alonzo made three saves for the clean sheet, while Rachel Barnette made four saves during the first half for the Pack. Vera wound up with four of the Pack’s eight shots.
The Wolfpack wraps up the 2008 campaign Sunday at 1 pm against No. 6 Florida State at NC State Soccer Stadium.
