Freshman Hanna Sommer hit a solo home run in the fifth and Kirsty Grant and Renada Davis had back-to-back doubles in the seventh to give sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman her 33rd win of the season. The Pack will now play No. 5 Tennessee in the first of two possible games Sunday afternoon for the NCAA Knoxville Regional championship.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman goes the distance in the longest postseason game in both NC State and Tennessee history. An 11th-inning, run-scoring triple ended the classic pitcher's duel between Weiman and Tennessee's Ellen Renfroe. The Pack played a second game later Saturday night.
Among the many records broken in a three-game sweep over Boston College were the ACC records for home runs in a game (8) and most total bases in a game (45).
NC State softball has won nine straight games and has moved into second place in the ACC standings. Sophomore Renada Davis has moved into a tie for the NCAA lead with her 24th homer of the season and her first career grand slam. Sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman picked up her 28th win of the season, breaking Abbie Sims' single-season record of 27 from 2007.
Junior Scout Albertson hit two more, including a grand slam, in the second game against Boston College to go with her two earlier in the day and sophomore Renada Davis and junior Leah Jones both added two more as well as the Wolfpack won for the 15th time in 17 games. The teams meet Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Pack's final game of the regular season.
