Mississippi State Downs Wolfpack Softball, 5-1

STARKVILLE, Miss. - NC State lost for the first time in four games, falling to Mississippi State 5-1 in the final game on Saturday at the Bulldog Round Robin. Wolfpack pitcher Shaina Ervin (1-1) took the loss, pitching five innings, allowing seven hits and walking four. Brooke Isley pitched the seventh in her first career collegiate action. Lisa Nentwig went 2-for-3 to raise her team-leading batting average to .556. Shanna Smith recorded an RBI groundout for the lone run in the sixth inning. NC State will face Mississippi Valley State at 10 am and La. Tech at noon on Sunday in Starkville, Miss. to close out the tournament.
Mississippi State jumped on the board in the first, working three walks and a triple to score a pair of runs off of Ervin. Despite leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, the Bulldogs notched another pair of runs with two hits and two stolen bases in the inning to move ahead 4-0.
Chamberlin reached on a throwing error by MSU third baseman Tanelda McDonald, advancing to second on the play. Ashleigh Davis pinch ran and smartly moved to third on Shaina Ervin's groundout to third. Smith groundout to second base scored Davis for the lone Wolfpack run.
The Bulldogs' Kelli Miller (2-0) scattered six hits and struck out one Wolfpack batter in picking up the win.
