Pack Softball Tops Host FIU 1-0 In Panther Invitational
Feb. 9, 2013
MIAMI - NC State's softball team used a run-scoring single by junior catcher Kirsty Grant and another strong pitching performance by sophomore Emily Weiman to record a 1-0 victory over host Florida International on Saturday in the FIU Panther Invitational.
Weiman (2-0) was outstanding again, allowing only two hits and recording four strikeouts. For the second consecutive game, she did not walk a batter.
The Wolfpack (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Hanna Sommer singled through the gap between shortstop and third base. Pinch runner Hayley Stowe advanced to second base on a wild pitch and Grant drove Stowe in with a single to left.
Stowe, being waved in by head coach Shawn Rychcik, slid in under the tag for the game's only run.
Grant, with a pair of singles, was the only Wolfpack player with more than one hit in the game.
"Kirsty has been swinging the bat really well through the preseason and we needed her hits today," Rychcik said. "Hanna did a great job getting on base, and Kirsty had a clutch hit."
Weiman also fielded her position well, throwing out four base runners on ground balls back to the pitcher. The Pack committed just one error in the game.
"Emily came into the season in great shape and she's looked sharp since we started practice," Rychcik said.
Rychcik's team immediately turned around to face the Panthers again in the third game of the day in the four-team tournament. Kansas faced Georgetown in the first game of the day.
