RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State (7-7) won its final game of the Wolfpack Challenge today at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, defeating Toledo by a score of 4-2.
Emily Weiman picked up the win for the Pack in the circle. She surrendered two runs (zero earned) off of four hits and struck out 11 Toledo batters in the complete game effort.
Katie Mansilla and Caitlin Dent paced NC State at the plate as they did throughout the Wolfpack Challenge. Mansilla put together a 2-for-3 performance for the day, driving in and scoring one run. Dent notched what proved to be a game-winning two-RBI single in the sixth inning.
Leah Jones also had an impressive day offensively, going 2-for-3 in the contest.
Mansilla drew a walk to lead off the game, then stole second to move into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Toni Ann Williford moved her to third, but Renada Davis went down looking to end the frame with the score remaining 0-0.
Weiman allowed a leadoff hit to Lindsey Tobias in the top of the second, but fanned the next three Toledo hitters to end the inning.
Jones notched a single to open the bottom half of the second, and was moved by Scout Albertson's sacrifice bunt. Chelsea Tate and Mansilla both reached to load the bases for Williford, who was hit by a pitch, scoring Jones. The next batter, Dent, tagged a line drive deep into the outfield, but it was caught by Toledo left fielder Melissa Rons on a diving play on the warning track to end the frame.
Toledo posted two runs after the Pack had recorded two outs in the third, thanks to three hits and one State error.
Kirsty Grant reached base on a walk in the fourth and came around to score on a Mansilla base hit to pull the Pack even with Toledo at 2-2.
Weiman retired the side in order in the top of the fifth to preserve the 2-2 tie.
The Wolfpack took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth by notching two runs with two outs in the frame. Mansilla and Williford reached base and were knocked home on a two-RBI double by Dent.
Weiman retired the side in the top of the seventh, giving State it's third victory of the weekend. Mansilla posted a .471 batting average with three RBI, four runs and one inside the park home run in the Wolfpack Challenge. Dent went 6-for-13 at the plate with two home runs and six RBI for the weekend.
