Softball Drops Two in Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State softball closed out play in the Carolina Classic today in Chapel Hill, N.C., competing in an afternoon double header against Florida International and Georgetown.
In the second game of the day, the Pack fell in the bottom of the seventh inning to Georgetown (2-6), 2-1.
NC State (7-7) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after back-to-back singles by Alyssa Allbritten and Bridget Desbois. Kirstin Morris, pinch running for Debois, scored on an error by Georgetown's second baseman in a first and third situation to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Shikara Lowe tied the score at 1-1 for the Hoyas in the sixth inning by belting a homerun off the foul pole in left field. Georgetown threatened take the lead in the frame, but a diving stop up the middle by Alyssa Ishibashi that led into a double play ended the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Morgan Peeler retired the first two Georgetown batters before surrendering two singles to the Hoyas, one of which scored the game winning run.
Allbritten posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate for NC State, while starting pitcher Peeler surrendered only two runs on six hits.
In the first game of the day for NC State, the Pack fell to Florida International (7-8) on a walk-off homerun by a score of 5-4.
Toni Ann Williford paced the Pack offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double in the contest.
In the top of the first, Allbritten reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a first and third play following a base hit by Desbois. In the second, Landon Warren reached on an FIU error and scored when Chelsea Tate notched a single, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Kayla Cox took the mound for the Pack, surrendering four earned runs on four hits in five innings of work while striking out five Panthers.
The Pack extended its lead in the fifth inning. Allbritten again reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second after Desbois drew a walk. Finally, with two outs in the inning, Caitlin Dent delivered a base hit to plate Allbritten for a 3-0 NC State lead. The next batter, Warren, recorded the Pack's fifth two-out base hit of the day to score Desbois and give NC State a 4-0 advantage.
Florida International evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning by notching three two-out base hits of their own.
Jade Hennig entered the game in relief of Cox in the sixth, retiring four of the first five batters she faced before surrendering the game-winning homerun to Kayla Burri in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Both Desbois and Peeler were named to the Carolina Classic All-Tournament team after posting excellent performances in the four games in Chapel Hill.
The Pack returns to action next weekend, traveling to Cookeville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Tech Combat Classic, where play will begin Friday at noon for NC State against Louisville.
