FULLERTON, Calif. – A solo home run by DePaul’s Mary Connolly in the fourth inning was the only scoring in a pitcher’s duel  between NC State’s Emily Weiman and DePaul’s Kirsten Verdun on Thursday night in the Wolfpack’s first game at the Judi Garman Classic at the Titan Softball Complex.

Both teams had five hits on the night and left six runners on base, but Connolly’s fourth home run of the season was the difference in the game.

Weiman (10-8) struck out four and walked two in the contest. Verdun struck out six and walked four.

“I thought Emily threw a pretty good game,” said first-year head coach Shawn Rychcik. “She had one bad pitch that went out of the park, but she matched DePaul’s pitcher throughout the game.”

The Pack (11-9-1) had runners on base in six of the seven innings, but DePaul turned three double plays to end significant threats in the second, third and fifth innings. Two of the double plays were on hard-hit liners that were caught  by infielders who threw out runners who were caught off the base.

“We got a couple of unlucky breaks, where we hit balls hard, but right at people,” Rychcik said. “We had some opportunities to score and made good contact, but we couldn’t get any of the balls to go through.

“Give them credit for making good plays. The breaks just didn’t go our way.”

Senior Bethaney Wells had two of the Pack’s five singles on the night, with Renada Davis, Hanna Sommer and Caitlin Dent contributing one each. In the bottom of the seventh, Wells walked with one out and advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches, but was unable to advance home with the tying run.

The Pack will continue play in the prestigious tournament on Friday, facing top-ranked Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m. EDT and Pacific at 8:30 p.m. EDT. Follow the games on GameTracker and on Twitter at @PackSoftball.
