March 17, 2012
NC State softball fell to Kentucky today in the University of Kentucky Tournament by a score of 7-6.
Morgan Peeler started the game in the circle for the Wolfpack. In 3.1 innings of work, she surrendered three runs off of four hits and struck out three Kentucky hitters. Emily Weiman came on in relief of Peeler in the third inning, and in 3.2 innings, she gave up one earned run off of three hits and also struck out three Wildcats.
Landon Warren went 2-for-2 with two walks in the contest. She scored three runs and also had one RBI for the Wolfpack. Bethaney Wells also had an impressive day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single and three-run home run.
The Wildcats got on the board in the first inning, scoring one run off of two hits and one Wolfpack error. Peeler limited the damage in the frame, though, by making an impressive defensive play and striking out the last batter of the inning. After the top of the first, State trailed the Wildcats 1-0.
Warren led off bottom of the first by belting a double in the gap, then Toni Ann Williford followed with a hit of her own. Later in the frame, Bethaney Wells posted a base knock which scored Warren, tying up the game at 1-1. With two outs in the frame, Scout Albertson reached on an error which plated Williford, but Wells was thrown out trying to score to end the Pack rally. Heading into the second inning, State held a 2-1 lead over the Wildcats.
Peeler retired the Wildcats in order in the top of the second and again in the third. In each of the first three frames of the game, she fanned one Wildcat batter.
Warren drew a walk to open the third, then came around to score on a base hit by Caitlin Dent, increasing the Pack advantage to 3-1.
The Wildcats batted around in the fourth inning, scoring five runs off of three hits and taking advantage of two State errors to take a 6-3 lead over the Wolfpack.
Kentucky threatened to score again in fifth, but centerfielder Warren was able to gun down the Wildcats' Ginny Carroll at the plate.
Warren continued her hot hitting in the 5th by opening the frame with a solo blast, her third of the season. Then, Dent hit a double off the wall to keep the rally going. Next, Wells knocked her second home run of the day and sixth of the season to even the score at 6-6.
By blasting her first home run of the season in the seventh inning, Kentucky's Brittany Cervantes gave the Wildcats a 7-6 lead.
Dent drew a walk to open the seventh inning and was replaced by pinch runner Kelsey Hoover, but the next three Wolfpack batters fanned, ending the game.
State softball returns to action tomorrow in the final game of the University of Kentucky Tournament to take on UMKC at 11 a.m.
