Four Homers Power Pack Softball Past UNCW, 5-0

RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Emily Weiman tied her career high and set a season high with 12 strikeouts, as the NC State softball team hit four home runs to defeat the UNCW Seahawks in game one of the doubleheader, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
“We lived on the home run ball in this game, but we were able to get by with it,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “I think we got some timely hitting in the game and Emily [Weiman] pitched really well in the game and was in control.”
Weiman was making her 29th start of the season and she made the most of it as she was in a groove from the first to the last inning of the contest. She struck out the side in the second and retired nine batters in a row spanning from the final out of the first to the second out of the fourth inning. The Pasadena, Md., native only allowed four hits and did not issue a walk to go along with 12 strikeouts.
“I just wanted to bounce back from a tough start over the weekend with a good start today,” said Weiman. “I approached this game just like it was an ACC game and I just wanted to do my job. My curveball and drop ball were working really well today and I was able to keep hitters off balance.”
For the fourth time this season, junior Renada Davis led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, her 11th of the season, to put the Wolfpack ahead 1-0. In the second inning, seniors Chelsea Tate and Scout Albertson hit back-to-back homers. Tate smashed her fifth round-tripper over the fence in right center, while Albertson blasted a 3-2 pitch to nearly the same location for her second four-bagger of the year to give NC State a 3-0 lead.
The Pack hit its fourth homer of the game in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of junior Sara Lippard. It was her third of the season and scored senior Leah Jones, who singled earlier in the frame to extend the advantage to 5-0.
