April 19, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State (21-26) dropped its final mid-week game of the season today, falling to Elon (20-14) by a score of 7-1 at Dail Stadium.
Toni Ann Williford paced the Pack at the plate in the contest by going 3-for-4.
Morgan Peeler started the game in the circle for the Wolfpack. In 3.2 innings of work, she surrendered four earned runs and struck out two Elon hitters. Emily Weiman came on in her relief in the fourth and gave up two earned runs in 2.1 frames. Jade Hennig entered the game in the seventh inning for State and did not give up a run.
Through the first three innings of the game, Williford had posted both of the Pack's two hits--one in the first and one in the third.
The Phoenix notched back-to-back base hits and drew a one-out walk to load the bases for their leading hitter, Carleigh Nester, in the fourth inning. Nester then belted her second home run of the season, a grand slam, to give Elon a 4-0 lead over the Wolfpack.
With two outs in the fourth, Weiman came on in relief of Peeler and then surrendered a two-run home run to Tomeka Watson, increasing the Phoenix lead to 6-0.
Renada Davis and Katie Mansilla notched singles in the fourth inning, then Scout Albertson drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Caitlin Dent. Dent put together an good at-bat, but went down looking to end the frame with the Pack still trailing Elon 6-0.
Elon added another run in the fifth inning and took a 7-0 lead over the Wolfpack.
Williford notched her third hit of the day in the fifth inning to put runners on first and second for Davis. Davis reached on an Elon error, plating Warren to get the Pack on the board at 7-1.
Pinch hitter Chelsea Tate was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh for the Wolfpack, then Warren followed with her first base hit of the contest, placing two runners on for Williford. She fanned, though, and Davis hit into a fielder's choice, leaving runners on first and third for Bethaney Wells. Wells then drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Leah Jones, who went down looking to end the game.
State softball returns to Dail Stadium for its final home series of the 2012 season on Saturday, April 22 for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m. versus Maryland for senior day, celebrating Warren, Williford, Peeler and Hennig. The three-game set concludes on Sunday, April 23 at noon.
