ELON, N.C. - Junior first baseman Leah Jones had a three-run homer and a two-run, bases-loaded single to drive in a career-high five runs in NC State softball's 11-0 victory over Elon in five innings on Wednesday at Hunt Baseball Park.
It is the Pack's sixth consecutive victory and 13th win in its last 15 contests.
"We did a really good job of coming out and getting on the board early," said first-year coach Shawn Rychcik. "This was a game we needed to come out and take care of business and we did that.
"Getting five runs in the top of the first is big. I was happy to see us get out like that early."
Sophomore shortstop Renada Davis also added a two-run homer to centerfield in the fifth inning, extending her ACC-leading and school-record total to 21 on the season.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Emily Weiman (25-16) picked up the win with four shutout innings before giving way to freshman Chelsea Stanfield in the fifth. Weiman has now pitched 19 2/3 innings without giving up a run after back-to-back shutouts and a three-game sweep of ACC-foe Virginia.
"It makes winning a lot easier when we don't give up any runs," Rychcik said. "Emily wasn't perfect today, but Elon is a good-hitting team and she did a good job of getting them out."
Junior rightfielder Scout Albertson drove in another three runs with a run-scoring single in the first and a bases-loaded single in the fourth. She has driven in 10 of her 24 runs this season in the Pack's last four games.
Davis began her 3-for-4 outing with a single up the middle on the game's opening pitch, the first of nine batters the Wolfpack (27-18-1) sent to the plate before the Phoenix came to bat. Junior Chelsea Tate followed with a double, and Davis scored on freshman Hanna Sommer's misplayed ground ball to second base.
Albertson drove in the game's second run with a single and Jones followed with a three-run shot to left, her third homer of the year. Albertson added a two-run, two-out single with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth to give the Pack a 9-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, junior catcher Kirsty Grant doubled to open the inning and Davis followed with a long fly ball to centerfield that bounced off the flagpole adjacent to the scoreboard. It was her ACC-leading 21st and the team's 64th of the season, two away from the single-season school record set in 2007.
Davis is now tied for second in the nation with Oklahoma's Lauren Chamberlain.
Stanfield pitched the final inning, extending the pitching staff's scoreless streak to 20 2/3 innings.
The Wolfpack concludes its regular season this weekend, traveling for a three-game series at Boston College, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a noon single game on Sunday.
