April 29, 2012
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - NC State softball dropped the rubber match in its three game series with Virginia by a score of 5-1 today in Charlottesville, Va.
Morgan Peeler started the game in the circle for the Wolfpack, and in two innings of work, she surrendered only three hits and struck out two Cavalier hitters. She was replaced by Emily Weiman in the third inning. In four innings of work, Weiman gave up two hits and struck out six UVa hitters.
Virginia posted two runs in the bottom of the first off of two hits and a walk, taking an early 2-0 lead over the Wolfpack. State responded the next half inning, though, when Lippard belted her second home run of the 2012 season, a solo shot, to put State on the board, trailing the Cavaliers 2-1.
The 'Hoos extended their lead in the second inning, scoring two runs with two outs thanks to one hit and three walks issued by Peeler.
Landon Warren, Toni Ann Williford and Davis posted three-straight base hits with one out in the top of the third inning, but Virginia ace Melanie Mitchell fanned the next two batters, forcing the Pack to leave three runners stranded in the frame.
Williford and Davis notched back-to-back singles in the fifth inning, but Bethaney Wells and Caitlin Dent were retired to end the frame. Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, State trailed UVa 4-1.
Virginia took advantage of a Wolfpack defensive miscue with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-1.
Warren notched her second base hit of the game to start the Pack rally in the seventh inning, but the Pack was unable to push the run across.
