RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team completed a successful first weekend of fall play by sweeping a doubleheader against Lenoir Rhyne on Sunday at Dail Stadium after winning a pair of games at Longwood on Saturday.
The Wolfpack defeated the Lenoir Rhyne Bears, 4-3, in the first game of the doubleheader on the strength of three home runs. Scout Albertson belted two homers and collected three RBI, while Hanna Sommer added a solo shot in the first inning. Chelsea Stanfield started in the pitching circle and was relieved by freshman Courtney Mirabella, who tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Junior Emily Weiman pitched the second game for the Pack and threw a complete game shutout, while only allowing three hits – all singles. Shortstop Renada Davis drove in the game’s first run with a double down the left field line to score Hayley Stowe from first. Senior Leah Jones then smashed a three-run homer in the fifth as State cruised to a 5-0 victory.
NC State topped Longwood on Saturday in Farmville, Va., by a score of 5-2 in the first game and 6-1 in the second contest. Weiman picked up the win in the first game as Jones homered twice. Davis along with freshman Molly Hutchison and Tyler Ross each hit a home run in the second game and Mirabella picked up the win in the circle.
The Wolfpack returns to fall action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it competes in the Ray Chandler Memorial Tournament held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh. State plays its first game at noon on Saturday.
