State Softball Concludes Fall Play Undefeated at 8-0
Sept. 29, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team completed its fall schedule undefeated, after collecting a pair of wins on Saturday and Sunday at the Ray Chandler Memorial Tournament held at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
The Wolfpack defeated the Campbell Camels in its first game of the day on Saturday, 7-5, before returning to the field later that afternoon to defeat Pitt Community College by a final score of 4-1. On Sunday, NC State bested Elon, 8-0, and routed North Carolina Central by the run rule, 9-1, in the second game.
“It’s good to conclude fall play 8-0,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “We had some struggles, but we did have some players get better during the fall. Hopefully, we’re a little closer to our starting lineup for the spring.”
Junior Emily Weiman, the 2013 ACC Pitcher of the Year, pitched the first game of the weekend against Campbell and picked up the win as senior Scout Albertson drove in the go-ahead runs. Against Pitt CC, freshman Tyler Ross provided the offense with two hits, while fellow newcomer Courtney Mirabella allowed one run in the circle to collect the win.
The Pack came out swinging on Sunday as the offense connected for nine hits in each game. Mirabella collected the win in circle against Elon, while sophomore Chelsea Stanfield pitched the second game and also claimed the win. Junior Renada Davis, a 2013 All-ACC first team selection, homered against North Carolina Central.
“We got to see a lot of kids play and get some experience, which will help us out a lot when trying to decide on a lineup in the spring,” Rychcik added. “I don’t think we’re done working on our lineup completely, but we did get some direction.”
NC State’s 2014 spring schedule has not been announced, but will be posted to GoPack.com when it is released.
