Pack Softball Holds First Official Practice
Jan. 7, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – With the start of the 2014 season nearing, the NC State softball team took to the field on Monday afternoon for its first official practice. The Wolfpack will have almost a month to prepare for its season opener on Feb. 6.
“I think we got a lot done on the first day of practice despite the cold and wet weather,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “Everybody got to throw a little and our outfielders were on the field for about an hour. They want to get better and we aren’t going to get better sitting inside, so we came out and had a pretty good practice.”
State enjoyed a successful fall season of exhibition play, which saw the squad go undefeated with an 8-0 record. The fall schedule gave many of the freshmen a glimpse of what playing collegiate softball is like and served as a tune-up for returning players.
Last season, the squad compiled a 35-20-1 record, highlighted by winning the program’s second ACC Championship Title to clinch an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Pack advanced to the Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Tennessee, which lost to Oklahoma in the championship game to finish as the national runner-up.
NC State opens its 2014 campaign at the Kajikawa Classic, held in Tempe, Ariz., against Oregon State on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. EST. The Wolfpack's slate includes 22 games against teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament, 15 games versus opponents that finished the year in the top 25 or received votes, and three games against teams that finished last season in the top 10.
The Wolfpack’s first home game will be on Feb. 25 against St. Bonaventure at Dail Stadium.
