Jan. 21, 2014
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After receiving votes in the final 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/USA Today poll, the NC State softball team will begin the 2014 season receiving 16 votes for the preseason top 25, as announced Tuesday by the NFCA.
The Wolfpack finished the 2013 season strong, winning the 2013 ACC Championship crown to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The squad posted a 2-2 record in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the regional final before falling to eventual national runner-up Tennessee.
State’s opponent in the 2013 ACC Championship game, Florida State, was listed in the preseason top 25 at No. 15.
NC State’s 16 votes were the most among ACC schools receiving votes outside of the top 25, as Notre Dame and Virginia Tech each received eight and North Carolina garnered two votes.
Of the 25 ranked teams in the poll, State will play regular-season contests against six of those teams: No. 4 Florida (4/12), No. 7 Arizona State (2/7), No. 8 Oregon (2/8), No. 15 Florida State (3/15, 3/16), No. 22 Stanford (2/6), and No. 23 Georgia (2/21).
In addition, five other teams on the Pack’s 2014 schedule received votes: Arkansas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oregon State and Virginia Tech.
The Wolfpack opens the 2014 season on Feb. 6 against the Oregon State Beavers at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. EST at the Tempe Sports Complex.
