Feb. 3, 2014
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State softball team was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) preseason poll by the league’s 11 head coaches, the league office announced on Monday. The Wolfpack received three first-place votes in the poll.
State collected 87 points in the ballot to finish second in the voting to preseason favorite Florida State, which received 98 points and the remaining eight first-place votes. In the poll, head coaches were not allowed to include their own team on the ballot.
Head coach Shawn Rychcik's squad defeated the Seminoles in the 2013 ACC Championship game, 1-0, to win its second ACC title in program history. Rychcik enters his second season with the program, after leading the team to a 35-20-1 record last season.
ACC newcomer Notre Dame finished third in the voting with 80 points, while North Carolina and Virginia Tech collected 74 and 70 points, respectively, to round out the top five.
NC State will open its 2014 slate on Thursday, Feb. 6, against Oregon State as part of the Kajikawa Classic held in Tempe, Ariz. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
