Softball Hosts Siena for Home Opener on Wednesday
RALEIGH, N.C. NC State softball will open the home portion of its 2009 season with a single game against Siena on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. GoPack.com will provide live stats of the action via the softball schedule page.
State stands at 2-6 on the young season with wins over No. 7 Oklahoma (2-1) and Indiana (3-2). Last week the Pack took on three top-15 teams, two in the top-10, and fell 2-1 in eight innings to No. 9 Cal.
Kristine Bechtholdt has led the red and white at the plate thus far, wielding a .333 batting average with two home runs and five RBIs. Alyssa Allbritten owns a .316 batting clip with four RBIs and a home run. Eight games into the season, six different Wolfpack players have belted long balls.
Four hurlers have taken the circle for the Pack, including Lindsay Campana (1-3), Mendy McKenzie (0-2), Stephanie call (1-0) and Morgan Peeler (0-1). Campana has tossed 28 innings and racked up 23 strikeouts while allowing just seven earned runs. Call topped the Hoosiers in her career pitching debut.
Siena will open its 2009 season at Campbell on Tuesday, Feb. 24 before making the short trek to Raleigh. A year ago the Saints posted a 16-33 slate. Lauren Weingart stands as the top returning bat on the Siena squad after hitting .316 last season with 24 RBIs, five home runs and five doubles. Two pitchers, Jamie Piela and Courtney Brinkman, are back for the Saints. Last year Piela and Brinkman combined for a 10-20 record and 110 earned runs in 193.2 innings of action.

Wednesday’s meeting between NC State and Siena will mark the first between the two programs.

With an all-time record of 198-127 in six years of play, the Wolfpack softball program is just two victories short of its historic 200th win.
