    Auburn Edges Softball, 2-1

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Lindsay Campana (6-2) tied her career high for strikeouts in a single game with 14, but two hits and two costly errors doomed NC State in a 2-1 loss to Auburn in the Pack’s final game at the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday, Feb. 28.

Anna Thompson (4-4) earned the win for Auburn in relief.

Alyssa Ishibashi belted a 1-1 pitch over the fence to lead off the bottom of the first, giving NC State a 1-0 lead.

That lead stood until the top of the sixth. Kelley Smiley singled through the right side and Caitlin Stangl reached on a bunt that died right in front of the plate. Stangl then got caught in a run down between first and second, allowing Smiley to take third, but Stangl also advanced to second when the Pack made an attempt to throw Smiley out at third. Consecutive fielding errors up the middle infield on the next two at-bats allowed Auburn to take over 2-1.

The Pack falls to 9-7 on the year with the loss, while the Tigers climb to 9-6.

NC State will host its own Wolfpack Challenge this coming week, March 5-7, at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on campus. The Pack will take on Coastal Carolina, Georgetown, Stony Brook and Longwood.
