Six-Run Seventh Lifts Softball Over Salukis, 7-6
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Down five with one out in the top of the seventh, NC State softball mounted a six-run rally to deflate Southern Illinois 7-6 at the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday, Feb. 28.
The Wolfpack victory moves the team to 9-6 on the year, while the Salukis slide to 10-5.
Stephanie Call (2-1) got the win in the circle, aiding herself with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with three RBIs and a long ball. Allison Presnell and Kristine Bechtholdt also drove pitches out of the park, with Bechtholdt going 3-for-4 and putting the Pack ahead for good.
Danielle Glosson (5-4) was tagged with the loss.
SIU picked up a run in the bottom of the first on a Chelsea Held walk with the bases loaded. They followed that up with two more runs in the bottom of the third on a dropped fly ball in center field with two outs.
Presnell trimmed the Saluki’s lead to 3-1 with a solo shot, her first of the year, to lead off the top of the fourth.
Southern Illinois stretched the score to 5-1 on a two-run Christina Trapini shot in the bottom of the fifth. Courtney Kennedy singled and then scored when Trapini went deep.
Alicia Garza added a final run for the Salukis with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
Six runs on five hits paved the way for a Wolfpack comeback in a monster seventh inning. A pitch hit Alyssa Ishibashi and Toni Ann Williford followed with an infield single. Caitlin Dent then delivered an RBI double, and Call nailed a three-run dinger to dead center to cut the lead to 6-5.
Southern Illinois then lifted Glosson for Long, who walked Presnell on four pitches. Glosson then went back to the circle, and Bechtholdt tagged her with a two-run blast that put the Pack in the drivers seat.
NC State will take on Auburn at 12:30 p.m.
