Weiman Named College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week
March 4, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Emily Weiman from the NC State softball team has been named the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week, announced by the website on Tuesday.
The Wolfpack pitcher helped lead the squad to a 4-0 record last week, earning the win in the circle in all four contests. On Tuesday against St. Bonaventure, the native of Pasadena, Md., threw her second career no-hitter by blanking the Bonnies in five innings pitched.
The game was shortened to just five innings due to the mercy rule, but Weiman still finished the contest with seven strikeouts and only allowed two walks. In the first game of the doubleheader versus Virginia on Saturday, she tossed her fourth consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win for the Pack.
Weiman carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game of the doubleheader, before a bloop single fell in for the first hit of the game for the Cavaliers. She had four strikeouts in that contest and tacked on an additional four strikeouts on Sunday, while allowing one earned run.
She finished the weekend with 24 innings pitched, struck out 19 batters, allowed 12 hits and three earned runs, while collecting four wins to improve her record on the season to 8-5.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 when it hosts USC Upstate in a doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m. The Spartans received votes in the latest top-25 poll.
