No. 25 Softball Slips Past Mercer, 1-0
CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 25 NC State got the only run that it needed in the bottom of the first to down Mercer, 1-0, in the second of two games on the day at the USF adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Megan Dalthorp (2-0) tossed a shut out for her second victory of the season. With the win, NC State climbs to 16-6 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Bears fall to 5-12.
Abbie Sims sent Jen Chamberlin across the plate with a two-out single in the bottom of the first to put the Pack on the board. Heather Gelbard and Blair Harkey both singled earlier in the inning, but were put out on fielder’s choice plays.
Mercer gave the Pack a scare in the top of the sixth as Holly Oglesbee singled then moved to second on a sac-bunt from Kelley Bretscher. But Dalthorp got Jamie Madruga to fly out to left and C.J. Martin grounded out to end the inning.
Three outs away from being finished, the Bears gave NC State one final shot. Ashley Anderson led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle then was replaced by Lindsay Talamantes at the bag, who moved to second on the ensuing groundout. Dalthrop then got Stacey Condra and Gigi Eykamp to hit into groundouts, ending the game.
Dalthorp allowed just four hits while issuing one walk in her second start of the season. She is yet to surrender an earned run.
April Cunningham (2-6) took the hard luck loss, giving up six hits. Gelbard and Sims both collected two, while Harkey and Allison Presnell each added one.
NC State will return to action at the USF adidas Invitational tomorrow, Friday, March 9, with two games. The Pack will take on Long Island at 11 a.m., before battling Chattanooga at 1 p.m.
