March 25, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team will play host to the Elon Phoenix in a single game on Wednesday, March 26. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Dail Stadium.
The Wolfpack owns a 9-6 all-time mark against the Phoenix and won last year’s meeting 11-0 in five innings at Elon’s Hunt Softball Park. State is 4-1 against the squad in contests played at Dail Stadium.
NC State (19-10, 10-4 ACC) is coming off a very successful week in which the team posted a 4-1 record, highlighted by series wins over Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. The Pack swept Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets and took two of three from the Hokies over the weekend.
Junior Sara Lippard had a great week for the Wolfpack at the plate, collecting seven RBI, six hits, three runs scored, a home run and a double. She hit her first career grand slam in the team’s 6-3 win over Virginia Tech in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader that gave the squad a 4-3 lead at the time.
In the circle, all three of the Wolfpack’s pitchers – Courtney Mirabella, Chelsea Stanfield and Emily Weiman - saw action for the squad during the week. Weiman earned all four of the team’s wins after pitching 29 innings and allowing only seven earned runs. In Sunday’s series finale, she tossed her ninth complete game shutout of the season, which ties as the best total in the nation.
Wednesday’s game will serve as faculty and staff appreciation day in which all NC State faculty and staff members in attendance will be entered into a drawing to win a grand prize package courtesy of NC State Athletics. Free pom poms will also be available for the first 50 children of faculty and staff members attending the game.
Admission to the game is free to all spectators.
The Phoenix has dropped seven of its last eight games dating back to a 5-0 loss against Syracuse on March 11.
Offensively, the squad is led by sophomore Emily Cameron with a batting average of .378 with six home runs. Freshman Alaina Hall has a team-leading 35 hits and a .368 batting average.
Several pitchers have appeared in games this season for Elon, but junior Chelsea White headlines the group with 18 appearances and 14 games started. She has thrown 67 innings and allowed 40 earned runs to compile a 4.18 ERA.
