March 26, 2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman and junior catcher Kirsty Grant were named ACC Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Florida State sophomore Lacey Waldrop shared the pitching honor with Weiman.
Weiman (12-12) was dominant in the circle for NC State in two games against No. 19 Virginia Tech on Saturday, allowing just two earned runs in the doubleheader. She did not allow the Hokies a hit until the fourth inning of the first game, which the Pack won 10-2 in five innings, the first time NC State has ever run-ruled a ranked opponent in the program’s 10-year history.
The native of Pasadena, Md., allowed just two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game, after the Pack had built a 9-0 lead. In the two games, Weiman allowed just six hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Weiman leads the league in innings pitched and is second in wins. This is the second time she has been named ACC Pitcher of the Week this season.
Grant was one of the leaders of NC State’s offense in the doubleheader sweep over No. 19 Virginia Tech, going 5-for-6 in the two games with a home run and 3 RBIs. Grant also had a stolen base, improving to a perfect 4-for-4 on the season. She leads the team in stolen bases. By completing the sweep with a 9-2 win in the second game, the Pack took its first sweep of a ranked opponent since 2007.
