    Softball Prepares for ACC Road Trip to Maryland

    RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team will take to the road this weekend for a three-game set at Maryland. Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday’s series finale is also scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

    In its last outing, the Wolfpack (20-10, 10-4 ACC) used a season-high four home runs to defeat the Elon Phoenix in five innings, 13-5. Junior Renada Davis recorded her second multi-homer game of the year and seventh of her career in the contest. It was the first time in her career that she has hit multiple home runs in the same inning, as she homered twice in the first inning.

    For the season, NC State is outscoring opponents 25-7 in the first inning. The Pack has compiled an 11-1 record on the year when scoring in the first frame.

    Senior Leah Jones also hit a round-tripper in the game, her third of the season. Morgan Medford, a freshman from Whitakers, N.C., hit her first collegiate home run against Elon for the final home run of the game for the Pack.

    In the circle, freshman Courtney Mirabella picked up her third win of the season and first complete game win of her career.


     

     

    This weekend’s trip will be the final conference road trip to Maryland, as the Terrapins leave for the Big Ten conference next season.

    SCOUTING MARYLAND
    The Maryland Terrapins have had a tough year to this point in the season and enter the weekend with a 2-24 record. In their last outing, the Terps split a doubleheader with North Carolina before losing the series finale on Sunday.

    It will be the 30th meeting between the Wolfpack and Terrapins and Maryland owns a 16-13 advantage in the all-time series. 

    Maryland is led offensively by its catcher, Shannon Bustillos, who has compiled a .328 batting average with 22 hits on the season. Outfielder Amanda McCann leads the team in hits with 23 and owns a batting average of .288.

    Several players have pitched for the Terps this season with Kaitlyn Schmels leading the way with 20 appearances and nine games started. She has been credited with the win in both games her team has won. Brenna Nation has made the most starts for the squad in the circle with 13.
