Softball to Host Exhibition Doubleheader on Sunday
Sept. 21, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State softball team will host a fall exhibition doubleheader against Longwood on Sunday at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Stadium.
Admission is free for all spectators for the two games, with first pitch in the opener set for noon.
First-year head coach Shawn Rychcik has had three weeks of individual workouts with the 15 players on his roster and nearly two weeks of full-team practices to become more familiar with his new team.
"We're anxious to get on the field and see what we look like in game competition," said Rychcik, who was hired to lead the program from Boston University in July. "We'll make some adjustments from there over the next couple of weeks."
The Wolfpack will also play in a 10-team fall tournament at Raleigh's Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Oct. 13-14.
The Wolfpack returns senior outfielder Bethaney Wells, who had 11 homers and was fourth in the ACC with a .567 slugging percentage last season, and 2012 ACC Freshman of the Year Renada Davis, a shortstop who set school records for batting average and on-base percentage in her inaugural collegiate campaign.
The Pack finished the 2012 season with a 23-31 record, including a 5-16 mark in the ACC.
"Everything is coming together," Rychcik said. "We have a lot of pieces of the puzzle to put together and every day we get a little closer. We don't play until February and every day out here is another step forward."
Rychcik and his team make consecutive trips to Florida for tournaments to open the season. The full schedule will be released later this month.
"The girls are working hard at what we are trying to put in and getting a good grasp of it," he said. "Hopefully, they will continue to improve. I am happy where we are at this point in fall practice."
Rychcik and his staff will also host a one-day clinic, featuring sessions on hitting, pitching and defense next Saturday at Dail Stadium. For more details, visit here.
