Pack Softball Announces Challenging 2014 Schedule
Nov. 26, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - After boasting a very tough schedule in 2013, the NC State softball team will play what is arguably a more challenging schedule in 2014, head coach Shawn Rychcik announced on Tuesday.
The Wolfpack's slate includes 22 games against teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament, 15 games versus opponents that finished the year in the top 25 or received votes, and three games against teams that finished last season in the top 10.
"I am very pleased with our schedule," said Rychcik. "We have an opportunity to see where we stand with the rest of the country on opening weekend. Our non-conference schedule is very challenging and it will help us prepare for ACC play and postseason."
State will be tested early in the season, as it will open the 2014 campaign at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., from Feb. 6 - Feb. 8. The Pack will play Oregon State in its opener, while other teams participating in the tournament that the Pack will face include Boise State, Fresno State, Oregon and Stanford. Arizona State finished last season at No. 7 in the rankings, while Oregon was No. 9.
The following weekend, NC State travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for the University of Arkansas Invitational. The Wolfpack will battle St. Johns on Valentine's Day in its first contest of the weekend, before facing the host Razorbacks later that day. State will play Butler and UMKC on the next day to complete action at the tournament.
From Feb. 21 - 23, the team will participate in the Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., at Disney's Wide World of Sports. State begins play against Lehigh, followed by Georgia, Albany and Marshall, before concluding competition in the event against Georgia Southern.
The Wolfpack's first home contest will be on Feb. 25 against St. Bonaventure. Rychcik and company will open conference play with a doubleheader against Virginia on March 1. The next day the squad will play the third game of the series against the Cavaliers, before hosting USC Upstate and Pittsburgh.
State's first ACC road trip of the season will be to Tallahassee, Fla., as the team competes against the Florida State Seminoles on March 15 and 16. The Pack then returns home to take on Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.
On April 12, the squad will play a single game against the Florida Gators, a team that advanced to the 2013 Women's College World Series and finished the year ranked No. 5 in the polls.
The 2014 Wolfpack schedule features 11 games against in-state opponents. State will host Elon on March 26, before taking on the Campbell Camels on April 2. The Wolfpack also will play doubleheaders versus Charlotte, East Carolina and UNCW.
NC State will travel to rival North Carolina this year after hosting the Tar Heels last season. The three-game series is scheduled to take place on April 26th and 27th, with a doubleheader on the first date.
In all, NC State will play 56 regular season games with 23 of those contests taking place at Dail Softball Stadium. The full 2014 schedule can be viewed by clicking HERE.
