Softball Signs Four to National Letters of Intent
Nov. 27, 2011
NC State softball will add four student-athletes in the fall of 2012, head coach Lisa Navas announced today. Lauren Masters, Hanna Sommer, Lana Van Dyken and Chelsea Stanfield have each signed a National Letter of Intent, committing to compete for the Wolfpack.
In order to recognize each student-athlete's achievements adequately, this will be the first in a series of stories on the 2011 signing class.
Masters, a native of Augusta, Ga., competes for the Southern Force travel softball team. The second and third baseman helped lead the Force to the 2011 Independence Day Tournament championship, as well as an impressive third place finish at ASA Nationals in 2011.
She has been competing for ASA softball teams since 10 and under. In the classroom, Masters was a member of the National Honor Society.
"Masters is a spunky, spitfire kind of player," says Navas. She is an extremely hard worker who truly loves the game--the type of player that you have to drag off of the field, and she will bring that at attitude with her to State. I am so excited to finally get her here, because as they say, `Great things come in small packages'".
Sommer, who hails from Tustin, Calif., plays first base for coach Pepe Vazquez at Tustin High School. She has hit well above .400 throughout her high school career, including an impressive .500 as a freshman, leading her to garner first team all-league honors all three years. In addition, she was named team offensive player of the year as a freshman, sophomore and junior.
In the classroom, Sommer also posts notable accomplishments, including being named a scholar athlete since 2008 and participating in the ASB club for leadership and the Helping Hands Club.
"Hanna carries a big bat," says Navas. "Coach Jeanine Gunther and I found her at the ASA 16 and under Nationals a few years ago, where she was playing for the eventual national champions, the OC Batbusters. I look forward to watching her try her hand at breaking all of our hitting records."
Later this week, fellow signees Stanfield and Van Dyken will be recognized.
Wolfpack softball opens its 2012 season Feb. 10 at the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Ga., against Utah State.
