Women's Tennis Defeats Missouri, 5-2

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 47 NC State women's tennis team picked up its third straight victory of the spring season with a 5-2 win over the No. 70 Missouri Tigers on Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack won all three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches on Saturday, earning straight set victories in seven of the combined nine matches.
Liza Fieldsend and Rachael James-Baker improved their doubles record to 2-0 on the year as they made quick work of Kelli Hine and Tracy Dong, running out to a 5-0 lead before closing out the set, 6-2. Joelle Kissell and Sophie Nelson followed just minutes later with a 6-1 victory in their match, taking the last five points of the set to secure the doubles point for the Pack.
In singles play, both Fieldsend and Martinez came back to win crucial first set tiebreakers in both their matches, ultimately resulting in victories for both. Fieldsend trailed Rachel Stuhlman 3-0 in the first set of the No. 4 singles match before battling back to force a tiebreaker, which she won 7-3 to win the first set 7-6.
Martinez followed a similar course, fighting off two set points versus Madison Rhyner at 5-4 and 6-5 before tying at it 6-6 and ultimately prevailing 7-3 in her tiebreaker as well. From there, both Fieldsend and Martinez cruised to easy victories in their respective second sets to win their matches.
James-Baker had no problem with Hine, defeating her 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 2 singles spot, while Hande and Janowicz won their respective matches from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the order. Joelle Kissell lost a hard-fought match to Gaytan-Leach, 6-4, 2-6, 8-10 in the No. 1 singles match of the day.
For its next match the Wolfpack will host Charleston Southern on Saturday, Feb. 8. First serve from the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center is set for Noon.
