RALEIGH, N.C. – Chloe Smith’s three set win at No. 5 singles led the No. 49 NC State women’s tennis team to its first ACC win of the season, over No. 67 Wake Forest. The Wolfpack topped the Deacons 4-3 in the innagural match at the J.W. Isenhower Tennis Center.
"Our team is improving," said head coach Hans Olsen. "I think we've been playing a lot of matches like this where every match has been close. We've had chances in every match that we've played. I give credit to Wake Forest, I thought they competed really well and played hard all the way through."
Jenny Garrity, former NC State player and coach, hit the ceremonial first serve to celebrate the grand opening of the tennis stadium. Garrity was a member of the NC State women's tennis team from 1988-92. She was a two-time All-ACC selection, and was the first Wolfpack women's tennis player to ever be ranked nationally.
Garrity still holds the record for the best career singles winning percentage, winning 65% of her matches. She returned to coach at NC State from 1996-98, and was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1998. Garrity and 28 other former players and coaches were recognized on the court at the match.
"We talked about the energy that we wanted to have as a team, and really feeding off of each other and going back and forth with a really good crowd and a really close match, I thought that might have been the difference for us," Olsen said.
The Deacons won the doubles point, taking two out of three from the Pack. Tatiana Illova and Nicole Martinez picked up the only doubles win for NC State, topping Ryann Cutillo and Rebecca Siegler, 8-2.
No. 52 Joelle Kissell picked up her second ranked win of the season, defeating No. 81 Kayla Duncan, 6-4, 6-3, in the first position. Ashley Miller, after dropping the first set 6-1, came back to top Rebecca Seigler in three sets in the No. 4 spot, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Christy Sipes won her second straight singles match, topping Brigita Bercyte, 6-3, 6-1. It was Smith’s win that clinched the match for NC State though. Smith defeated Karen Forman in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
"I'm proud of how hard we fought, and really pleased for Chloe to have such a great experience," said Olsen. "The first match in the stadium, ever, came down to her court, and to have it be 7-5 in the third set, I thought she did a great job being a fighter out there."
NC State will return to action March 7, in Tuscon, Ariz., against Arizona.
