Wolfpack Downed by No. 4 Virginia

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium.
Virginia opened the competition by capturing the doubles point, taking two of three hard-fought matches.
The Wolfpack duo of Rachel James-Baker and Liza Fieldsend rallied from a 6-0 deficit versus Danielle Collins and Maci Epstein, scoring eight straight points to claim an 8-6 victory on court two.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Joelle Kissell and Sophire Nelson fell to Stephanie Nauta and Li Xi by the score of 8-4, setting the stage for the No. 3 doubles match between the Wolfpack duo of Elisha Hande and Nicole Martinez against the Virginia pair of Rachel Pierson and Marie Faure.
Martinez and Hande led 7-6 before Pierson and Faure tied it at 7-7 to force a deciding tiebreaker for the doubles point. From there, the Cavaliers won the tiebreak 10-8 to claim the match and the doubles point.
In singles play, Kissell fell to the No. 33 ranked Collins, 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 1 spot in the order, while James-Baker dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to No. 45 Nauta on court two. Martinez came up short against No. 59 Pierson, 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 3 singles position while Fieldsend, playing on court four, fell against Epstein, 6-3, 6-0.
Nelson dropped her match, 6-2, 6-2 to Caryssa Peretz at No. 5 singles, while Christy Sipes took Marie Faure to three sets, before falling 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).
The Wolfpack will play its final home match of the year tomorrow versus No. 26 Notre Dame on Senior Day at Dail Outdoor Stadium. First serve is set for noon between NC State and the Fighting Irish.
