NC State Closes Out Southern Shootout
Sept. 23, 2012
ATLANTA – The NC State women’s tennis team completed the Southern Shootout on Sunday afternoon, capping off their first tournament of the fall season at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park.
In doubles action, sophomores Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez were the only Wolfpack duo to collect a victory on the day, upending Georgia State’s Phoebe Chiem and Megan Nelms, 8-3, in the Blue Flight. Also playing in the Blue Flight was the NC State tandem of junior Christy Sipes and freshman Taylor Zaytoun, but Georgia State’s Jocelyn Ffriend and Whitney Byrd eased their way to an 8-0 victory. In the Panther flight, junior Joelle Kissell and freshman Rachael James-Baker were defeated, 8-4, at the hands of Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah and Masa Grgan.
The Wolfpack had a few bright spots in its final singles matches of the tournament, as Kissell, ranked 19th in the ITA’s preseason singles poll, collected her second win over a top-30 player in the last three days, as she cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over South Florida’s (USF) 29th-ranked Ecaterina Vasenina in the Peachtree Flight.
NC State’s freshman class had a pair of strong outings, too. James-Baker bounced back from a tough first two days in the MLK Flight to pick up her first collegiate singles victory, 6-2, 6-1, over USF’s Kate Parker, while Zaytoun, competing in the Phoenix Flight, notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Chiem. Zaytoun closed out the weekend with a 2-1 record in singles play.
In other singles action, senior Chloe Smith was downed 6-0, 6-3 by USF’s Loreto Alonso in the Piedmont Flight, while Sipes fell, 6-1, 6-2, to USF’s Paula Montoya. Sophomore Elisha Hande, playing in the Rialto Flight, was unable to post her second-straight win in as many days, as she was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Georgia State’s Linn Timmermann. Nelson, who took the first set, 6-1, in her contest against Ffriend, could not put her opponent away and dropped the final two sets 6-3 and 6-2 in the Phoenix Flight.
