WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The NC State women’s tennis team completed the first day of the 2012 ITA Carolina Regional Championships Thursday afternoon, as sophomore Elisha Hande continued her hot streak with two victories in the qualifying rounds to earn a bid to the tournament’s main draw.

Hande began the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Wake Forest’s Brigita Bercyte in the first round of qualifying, before cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win against UNC Wilmington’s Christine Kharkevitch to punch her ticket into the main draw. The Southampton, England native has now won six straight singles matches dating back to the opening round at the USTA Women’s National College Invitational.

Several other Wolfpack players competed in the qualifying rounds of the singles draw, vying for a bid to the Friday’s main draw, but none were able to make it through to the main draw.

Freshman Taylor Zaytoun dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 contest to UNC Wilmington’s Kelly Cameron in her first round qualifier, while junior Christy Sipes fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Charlotte’s Natsuko Takayanagi and sophomore Sophie Nelson was downed, 6-3, 6-3, to UNC Greensboro’s Dilara Yurtkuran, the qualifying draw’s second-ranked player.

The Pack will open the day with several doubles teams competing in the main draw after receiving a first round bye. Tomorrow’s matchups are as follows:

Joelle Kissell/Rachael James-Baker (NC State) vs. Andersson/Popova (South Carolina)

Nicole Martinez/Sipes (NC State) vs. Goldfeld/Mar (Duke)

Nelson/Zaytoun (NC State) vs. Garcia/Portioli (Winthrop)

Hande/Chloe Smith (NC State) vs. Cameron/Hales (UNCW)

Singles play will commence once doubles play has concluded, where several NC State players will compete, including No. 19 Kissell, the draw’s top-seeded player. First round matchups are scheduled as follows:

No. 19 Kissell (NC State) vs. Dai (North Carolina)

Smith (NC State) vs. Linsell (App. State)
