Women's Tennis Concludes Day Two at ITA Regionals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Elisha Hande extended her singles win streak Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Elon’s Jordan Johnston in the first round of the main draw at the 2012 ITA Carolina Regional Championships. Hande has now won seven in a row dating back to the opening round of play at the USTA National College Invitational on Oct. 6.
In other singles action, freshman Rachael James-Baker dropped her first round contest in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to last year’s Carolina Region Singles Champion and 24th-ranked Lauren McHale of North Carolina. Sophomore Nicole Martinez also took on a ranked ACC opponent in her first round match, but could not pull through, and fell, 6-4, 6-2, to Duke’s 35th-ranked Hanna Mar.
Senior Chloe Smith was defeated in her first round matchup against Appalachian State’s Ellie Linsell, 6-3, 6-3, before top-seeded and 19th-ranked junior Joelle Kissell was ousted by North Carolina’s Ashley Dai, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Christy Sipes, playing in a consolation draw after being unable to escape Thursday’s qualifying rounds, picked up a 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over UNC Wilmington’s Christina Riley, before being downed, 6-4, 6-2, by South Carolina’s Ximena Stiles. Freshman Taylor Zaytoun also competed in a consolation draw and defeated North Carolina A&T’s Kianna Henry, 6-2, 6-2, but was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, by Charleston Southern’s Susita Das in her second match of the day. Sophomore Sophie Nelson took on Wake Forest’s Karen Forman in a back draw match, but was outlasted, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Wolfpack was unable to pick up a first round victory in its four doubles matches. The duo of Hande and Smith dropped an 8-3 decision to UNC Wilimington's Kelly Cameron and Miller Hales, Sipes and Martinez fell, 8-1, to Duke's Hanna Mar and Ester Goldfeld, Zaytoun and Nelson lost to Winthrop's Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portioli and Kissell and James-Baker were defeated, 8-4, at the hands of South Carolina's Josefin Andersson and Katarina Popova.
Hande will continue her quest through the singles draw of the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 20, in a 10 a.m., battle against Duke's Annie Mulholland.
