Women's Tennis Hosts East Carolina in Season Opener
Jan. 30, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s tennis team will open its 2013 season on Thursday, Jan. 31, when it hosts East Carolina. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m., inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Head coach Hans Olsen enters his 12th spring season after leading the Wolfpack into the second round of the ACC Tournament for the second straight year last season, downing Boston College in a 4-3 thriller.
The Wolfpack is led by junior and 2012 All-ACC selection Joelle Kissell, who enters the 2013 season ranked No. 34 in the nation in the first ITA singles poll of the spring. The Hostetter, Pa., native defeated three ranked opponents during the fall season, including 2012 All-American and 23rd-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, of Georgia State, USF’s 29th-ranked Katie Vasenina, and Texas A&M’s 17th-ranked Cristina Stancu in a three-set battle to cap the fall season.
Sophomore Elisha Hande led NC State during the fall with a 9-5 overall singles record, which included a streak of seven straight victories – all in straight sets – over the course of two tournaments. Hande’s first four wins during that streak earned her a victory in her singles flight at the USTA NTC Women’s Invitational, Oct. 6-8, in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The remainder of NC State’s roster is comprised of seniors Tatiana Illova and Chloe Smith, junior Christy Sipes, sophomores Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez, and newcomers Rachael James-Baker and Taylor Zaytoun.
East Carolina (1-0) enters Thursday’s match with a win already under its belt, after defeating Appalachian State, 4-3, in its season-opener back on Jan. 19. The Pirates won the doubles point, before receiving singles victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots to seal the victory.
