No. 44 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 24 Arkansas, 5-1
Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 44 NC State women’s tennis lost to No. 24 Arkansas 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the loss the Pack falls to 4-2 on the season and Arkansas improves to 5-4 on the season. The Wolfpack’s only two losses this season have come against ranked squads. Each of Arkansas’s losses have come against top-20 teams and all of them by the score of 4-3.
Due to an early scheduled flight out of Raleigh for Arkansas the match began in singles play. In the first match No. 1 Aurelija Miseviciute defeated No. 79 Daria Petrovic 6-1, 6-2. The next two matches were a pair of 6-4, 6-2 defeats. Lenka Hojckova fell to Ela Kaluder at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 singles No. 97 Berkley Brock finished next as she lost to Anouk Tigu 6-4, 6-2.
The next match to finish was the No. 4 singles match between Julia Roach and Maryori Franco. Franco took the first set 6-1 before Roach battled back to take the second set 6-1. In the third and final set Franco and Roach exchanged breaks before Roach took the final two games of the set to win 7-5. With that win Roach moved into second place all-time in school history for singles victories.
At No. 5 singles Neils Barringer faced Nanar Airapetian. Airapetian took the first set 6-3 and was leading 4-1 in second set before Barringer tried to make a comeback. Barringer rattled off the next four games to take a 5-4 lead before losing the set 7-5 to clinch the victory for the Razorbacks.
In the last singles match of the day Catherine Grotz and Audrey Bordeleau battled at No. 6 singles. Grotz dropped the first set 6-2 before losing a tight second set 6-4.
Due to Arkansas having to leave to catch their flight and the match already clinched, no doubles matches were played.
The women’s tennis team will return to action as they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on No. 32 South Carolina. The match begin at 2 pm on Friday February 22 before they travel back to Raleigh to host Princeton on Sunday at 1 pm at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
