No. 50 Women's Tennis Drops Match to No. 15 UNC
The No. 50 NC State women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 15 North Carolina on Thursday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tar Heels took all three doubles matches before winning five singles matches in the victory. With the loss the Pack drop to 11-8 (3-5 ACC) this season while the Tar Heels improved to 13-6 (4-2 ACC) on the year.
The match began with the Tar Heels taking all three doubles matches. Daria Petrovic and Berkeley Brock fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, against the No. 3 doubles team in the nation. The No. 51 tandem from North Carolina took the match at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, against Lenka Hojckova and Julia Roach. Catherine Grotz and Kristin Bleakley lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
The first match to be completed was at No. 2 singles where Daria Petrovic fell to No. 8 Sanaz Marand, 6-4, 6-1. Catherine Grotz then lost to Sophie Grabinski, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5 singles to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 team lead.
North Carolina was able to clinch the victory after No. 29 Katrina Tsang defeated Berkeley Brock, 6-2, 6-2, at the top spot. Lenka Hojckova was able to defeat her first ranked opponent of the season in straight sets. In her match at No. 3 singles, she defeated No. 97 Austin Smith, 6-4, 6-3.
Julia Roach then lost a three-set heartbreaker at No. 4 singles. After losing the first set against Laura Reichert 6-2, Roach fought back and won the second set 6-3 before losing a close final set 6-4. The final match of the afternoon saw Neils Barringer drop a 6-3, 6-3 match against Meg Fanjoy.
The Wolfpack will return home to face No. 32 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. It is the first time the Pack has played a home match in 23 days, a span of six road matches.
