No. 32 W. Tennis Falls 4-3 to No. 40 Virginia
Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 32 NC State women's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 40 Virginia on Saturday, April 10. In what was an evenly contested matchup, the doubles point ended up deciding the victory. The loss drops the Wolfpack to 9-9 on the year, and moves the Cavaliers to 11-7.
The doubles point, which has been critical for the Pack this year went in the Cavaliers favor. Sandhya Nagaraj and Daria Petrovic moved back up to No. 1 doubles, but lost to No. 65 Jennifer Stevens and Hana Tomljanovic 8-4. Lenka Hojckova and Tana Illova had a big win, taking down No. 44 Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra 8-4. Berkeley Brock and Diana Mortlock couldn't get past Emily Fraser and Maria Fuccillo to give the Pack the point, losing 8-4.
Illova returned to the court for the first time in two weeks and lost 6-3, 6-2 to Stevens. Brock easily dispatched Vierra in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Chloe Smith knotted the score at 2-2, when she beat Fuccillo 6-3, 6-4.
Petrovic battled, but fell in a three-setter to Tomljanovic 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The Cavaliers clinched the victory with Hojckova losing 7-6 (4), 6-3 to Fraser. No. 68 Nagaraj closed out the day with an upset victory over No. 42 Hardenbergh, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The Wolfpack takes on No. 69 Virginia Tech tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. It will be the last home match for seniors Brock and Petrovic.
