Wolfpack Set to Open Fall at Southern Shootout
Sept. 20, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team will travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Southern Shootout this Friday-Sunday, Sept. 21-23. The tournament, which will be hosted by Georgia State, will feature eight singles flights and four doubles flights.
"We have a very goal-oriented focus right now," head coach Hans Olsen said. "Our goals will flow into the tournament from the practice courts."
Despite the fall season differentiating from the spring in the fact that matches are played individually and not in a team format, Olsen will still be keeping a close eye on the players this weekend.
"Although the results will be individual, the team will line up like it's a team match," Olsen said. "I want to start the year with a strong feeling of what it's like to play as a team. The energy, the competitiveness, the intensity - we want them to start that habit with this first tournament."
Each day of the tournament will begin with doubles matches, as the Wolfpack boast the most doubles teams of any team competing in the three-day, round robin tournament.
In the Panther Flight, the NC State duo comprised of junior Joelle Kissell and freshman Rachael James-Baker will battle familiar faces of the ACC in Georgia Tech's Elizabeth Kilborn and Kendal Woodard, while sophomore Elisha Hande and senior Chloe Smith will take on another Yellow Jacket duo of Alex Anghelescu and Jasmine Minor in the Pounce Flight.
The Blue Flight feature a third Georgia Tech/NC State matchup, as sophomores Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez will meet Megan Kurey and Natasha Prokhnevska, while junior Chrity Sipes and freshman Taylor Zaytoun challenge Georgia State's Phoebe Chiem and Megan Nelms in the White Flight.
In one of the more highly-anticipated matchups, due to the current rankings of the players, the 19th-ranked Kissell will take on 23rd-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah of Georgia State in the Peachtree Flight. Kissell was an All-ACC honoree and Tere-Apisah was an All-America selection last season.
In the Piedmont Flight, Smith will meet Georgia State's Natallia Vavulina, while the Centennial Olympic Flight will feature junior Sipes up against Georgia State's Masa Grgan
James-Baker will make her fall season debut against Chaimaa Roudami of Georgia State in the MLK Flight, as sophomore Martinez will meet Georgia State's Linn Timmermann in the Rialto Flight.
In the final flight, the Phoenix Flight, consists of three more matchups pitting the Wolfpack against the Jaguars, as Nelson will face Chiem, Zaytoun meets Maryna Kozachenko and Hande squares off with Jocelyn Ffriend.
All matches are schedule for 10 a.m.
