No. 19 Kissell Ousted at Riviera/ITA All-Americans
Oct. 4, 2012
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - NC State junior and 19th-ranked Joelle Kissell opened play at the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday afternoon, but was defeated by 29th-ranked Ecaterina Vasenina of South Florida in the tournament's first round.
Kissell and Vasenina were no strangers to one another, as the two met less than two weeks ago at the Southern Shootout in Atlanta, Ga. Kissell won that matchup, 6-4, 6-2, but Thursday's match on the west coast played out a bit differently. Vasenina won the first set, 6-3, but Kissell showed some resiliency in the second set before falling, 7-5.
Kissell will take on Michigan's Emina Bektas, the nation's No. 9 ranked player in the first round of the main draw's consolation bracket on Friday at 12:30 p.m., Pacific Time. The winner will advance to a 3:45 p.m., match against the winner of Texas A&M's Cristina Stancu and UNLV's Lucia Batta.
