    CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The NC State volleyball team opened its season on Friday with 3-0 sweep overJacksonville in the opening round of the Hampton Inn & Suites West AshleyInvitational at the College of Charleston's TD Arena.

    Third-year head coach Bryan Bunn's team reduced the mistakes that were evident in last week's intra-squad scrimmage, totaling 14 attack errors and nine service errors in the contest against the Dolphins. The Pack finished the match with a .232 attack average.

    "I thought we played pretty well," Bunn said. "We cut down on our errors and played pretty good defense.

    "We have to slow things down some and make sure we don't make careless mistakes."

    The Pack opened with a 25-14 first set win, led by junior middle blocker Meredith Richardson's accurate hitting, who had nine kills in the opening frame.

    State followed with a 25-16 win in the second set, as both Richardson and junior Brie Merriwether played well in the middle. Merriwether had three blocks in the first two sets.

    The Pack closed out the quick contest by matching the score in the opening set, 25-14, to get the season off to a 1-0 start.

    Richardson finished the match with a career-high 13 kills, three blocks, a .500 attack average and 14.5 points. She wasn't the Wolfpack'sonly top performer, as Merriwether finished with seven kills, a .538 attack average, a team-high five blocks and 9.5 points.

    Sophomore Nikki Glass had 10 digs to go with her six kills and senior setter Megan Cyr had 29 assists.

    The Wolfpack returns to action on Saturday morning, when it faces Sacramento State at 10:30 a.m. The Pack will then face host College of Charleston at 7 p.m. in the final match of the tournament. Follow the action through Live Stats at this link: Gametracker
