RALEIGH, N.C. - The fourth annual Wolfpack Challenge intrasquad volleyball match gave spectators a reason to be excited for the 2013 season, as the red and white teams put on a competitive exhibition resulting in a 2-2 draw, Saturday evening in Reynolds Coliseum.

"We were able to see a lot of things during the match, both good and bad," said head coach Bryan Bunn. "I think we played pretty good defense, but we need to improve on offense. We need to make sure that we are taking care of the ball behind the setter."

The Wolfpack was divided into two teams with players switching back and forth between the red and white squads.

Senior Brie Merriwether led the offensive output with 15 kills and a .379 attack average. Three players tied for the next-highest kill total, as Rachel Buckley, Dariyan Hopper and Meredith Richardson each recorded 11. Richardson posted an impressive .588 hitting percentage, while Hopper and Buckley registered .308 and .300 attack averages, respectively.

"Brie did a great job in the middle of the court and Rachel was great on the right side," Bunn added.

On the defensive side, freshman libero Rachel Eppley paced the group with 15 digs, while junior defensive specialist Alston Kearns chipped in with 11.

Setter Tanna Aljoe dished out 39 assists while playing solely for the white team and Maggie Speaks, who played the entire time on the red team, collected 41 assists.

The Wolfpack opens the season on Friday, Aug. 30 against Canisius College at 4 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y.
