Volleyball Shuts Out Canisius in Season Opener, 3-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The NC State volleyball team opened its 2013 campaign with a 3-0 win against Canisius Friday afternoon in the Golden Griffin Invitational. The Wolfpack won the first set, 25-15, before closing out the second set by a score of 25-20. In the third set, State prevailed, 25-21, to seal the victory.
The Wolfpack and Griffs traded points in the early stages of the first set, before the Pack took the lead for good after a kill by junior captain Rachel Buckley to make the score, 9-8. NC State went on a 14-6 run to end the set and go up, 1-0, in the match.
In the second set, State jumped out to an 11-2 advantage before the Griffs scored three unanswered points to make it, 11-5. Canisius stayed within a few points of the Wolfpack throughout most of the set, but never led in the second frame.
The Griffs tried to reverse their fortunes in the third set by winning six of the first nine points decided in the set to lead, 6-3. The Pack shifted the momentum in the set by going on a 5-0 run midway through the period to earn an 11-8 lead and never relinquished it.
Senior Meredith Richardson led the squad in kills with 12 and an attack average of .526. Nikki Glass, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., registered the team’s next-highest total with nine followed by senior Brie Merriwether with seven.
At the setter position, sophomore Tanna Aljoe earned the start and recorded 36 assists. She also contributed three kills and four digs.
The Pack returns to action at the Golden Griffin Invitational against the Cleveland State Vikings later this evening after the conclusion of the Hartford and Eastern Michigan contest
