BUFFALO, N.Y. – The NC State women’s volleyball team captured the 2013 Golden Griffin Invitational crown with a 3-0 win against Hartford Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. State won a tightly contested first set, 25-22, before winning the second set by a comfortable, 25-14 margin. The Pack cruised to a 25-13 triumph in the third set to claim the win.

The Wolfpack completed its opening weekend of play in the same fashion that it started the 2013 campaign – with a 3-0 sweep. State improved to 3-0 on the season after collecting three shut out wins in the invitational, while the Hawks fell to 1-3.

“It’s good to come up here and play well on the road,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “We started off a little slow in the first set, but we bounced back to play well in the second and third sets.”

Senior Meredith Richardson earned tournament MVP honors with another impressive showing against the Hawks, while junior Alston Kearns joined her as a member of the all-tournament team.

“Meredith played great this weekend,” Bunn added. “I think she hit almost .450 for the weekend and did a nice job with a very low error percentage. Alston did as well with 37 digs between the two matches yesterday and followed that up with nine today.”

Senior middle blocker Brie Merriwether led the Wolfpack offense with eight kills and a .636 hitting percentage. The Orlando, Fla., native also tallied 10 blocks (two solo and eight assisted). Dariyan Hopper, a junior from Minooka, Ill., also contributed eight kills and a .375 attack average. Rachel Buckley and Richardson each recorded four kills, with Buckley tallying a .667 hitting percentage and Richardson a .500 average.

Setter Tanna Aljoe registered 26 assists in the contest, while Kearns paced the squad with nine digs. Aljoe also pitched in on the defensive end with seven digs.

The Wolfpack returns to action in its home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. against Appalachian State in Reynolds Coliseum. The match will be streamed live on GoPack.com free of charge.
