NC State volleyball took down Illinois State 3-2 in the Indiana Tournament Friday, Sept. 3. The victory moves the Wolfpack to 4-0 overall, and gives the Redbirds (4-1) their first loss of the season.
Becah Fogle led the Pack offensively, scoring 19 kills on the match, her highest total this season. Margaret Salata and Luciana Shafer also added double-digit kills, notching 18 and 16 respectively. Megan Cyr contributed a season-best 55 assists to lead the squad.
On the defensive side, there was certainly an all-around team effort, with five Wolfpack earning double-digit digs. Senior libero Kelly Wood scored a team-best 19, while also contributing two service aces and two assists. Fogle (13), Shafer (15), Cyr (11) and Alex Smith (10) were the others in double-digits.
The Redbirds took the first set 26-28, forcing the Wolfpack to mount a comeback. The Pack responded, winning the second game by a close 27-25 margin.
In the third set, NC State fell to an early deficit, but, thanks to back-to-back Salata kills, regained momentum, forcing Illinois State to call a timeout with the score 6-2. The Wolfpack kept pushing, and after a closely fought set, captured the 25-20 win.
The Pack again fell behind early in the fourth set, but came back to tie the score at 16-16 before ultimately losing 20-25.
In the fifth set, NC State fell behind by a score of 1-4 early, but took advantage of two Redbird attack errors to begin a comeback. The Wolfpack continued to battle, eventually winning the final set 15-13.
The victory moves the Pack to 4-0 in head coach Bryan Bunn’s first season at the helm of the NC State Program.
The Wolfpack returns to action tomorrow in Bloomington, Ind. to take on Arkansas State at 10 a.m. and tournament host Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
