NC State grabbed a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern in the Wolfpack’s first match of the Hilton RTP Invitational. The win moved the Pack to 6-1 in the 2010 season, but dropped the Eagles to 3-5 on the year.
Margaret Salata led the offense, tallying 17 kills in the match, one away from her season high, while hitting at a team leading .630 clip. She also scored three service aces to go along with six digs and four blocks. Becah Fogle continued to produce offensively for the Wolfpack, adding 16 kills. Together, Salata and Fogle combined for 33 of the Pack’s 50 total kills.
Megan Cyr led NC State with 45 assists, while also scoring two service aces and earning eight digs.
Defensively, libero Kelly Wood paced the Pack, gathering 12 digs.
The Wolfpack jumped to an early 9-3 lead, forcing Georgia Southern to call a timeout. The dominance continued until the Eagles began to settle in offensively, climbing back to make the score 20-19. NC State kept pushing, and eventually took the set by a 25-21 score.
The second set proved to be a back-and-forth battle, where both teams were plagued by errors. In the end, the Eagles prevailed, winning 22-25.
In the third set, there were ten ties and nine lead changes before the Wolfpack began to pull away 16-4. The Pack extended this lead, forcing the Eagles to take another timeout. The Eagles rallied back, but it was not enough, as NC State won the set 25-19.
NC State fell to an early deficit in the fourth set, as large as three points (7-10) before staging a comeback. The set featured 14 lead changes. The Wolfpack did not take the lead until 20-19, finally winning the set 25-23.
The Pack return to action tomorrow in Reynolds Coliseum to take on Mercer at 1 p.m. and Morehead State at 7:30 p.m.
