Oct. 18, 2013
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State women’s volleyball team suffered its second loss in conference play against the Virginia Tech Hokies, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23), Friday night in Cassell Coliseum. The lost for the Wolfpack snapped a five-match conference winning streak.
Senior Meredith Richardson led the Wolfpack (14-5, 5-2 ACC) offense with 10 kills, followed by classmate Brie Merriwether and Dariyan Hopper who each smacked eight kills. Freshman Maddie Brown paced the defense with 14 digs and junior Nikki Glass chipped in with 13. Sophomore setter Tanna Aljoe recorded 35 assists.
The Wolfpack got off to a slow start in the first set as the Hokies (17-4, 5-2 ACC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage, but the Pack responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Virginia Tech countered with consecutive points to regain the lead and never relinquished it throughout the remainder of the set.
In the second set, NC State struggled to get into a rhythm offensively and was not able to gain the advantage in the frame. The period saw three ties, but the lead never changed as the Hokies scored the first two points in the set and were able to hold the advantage. State trailed by only two down the stretch, but Virginia Tech ended the set on a 4-2 run.
NC State’s defensive prowess was on display in the third set, but the Wolfpack came up empty handed as it forced nine attacking errors and limited the Hokies to a .079 attacking percentage. State seemed to be in great position to win the set after leading, 21-20, but Virginia Tech scored three unanswered points to take the lead 23-21 and the Pack could not recover.
The Wolfpack returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when it makes the short trip over to Charlottesville, Va., to face the UVA Cavaliers after facing the Hokies on Friday. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. inside Memorial Gym.
